This is one practical application that I have been playing around with lately, and having a lot of fun in the process. If you are interested in privacy whilst online this is one you want to read. You might just be into privacy or you might be a political activist trying to get information out of Communist China or North Korea, either way you need to be familiar with a number of technologies, one being proxy servers. In regards to computers, a proxy can be a whole computer system or an application running on a system. The proxies act as an intermediary between two computers, usually between clients looking for resources on another client or server. The proxy will connect to the resource you are requesting whether it is a web page or file or other service, on behalf of your home or local computer. View Full Article »

Okay everyone here you go. I have been writing about virtualization software for a while now sometimes with no more than just a simple mention. I will now show you how to set one up for yourself. By now you should all have some kind of Linux distro downloaded in an ISO format and you should also have VMware installed on your computer as well. Go ahead and execute the VMware server application and lets get started. Just follow along with me and everything is going to smooth and by the numbers. Once you start the application you should see a screen similar to the one in the figure below. View Full Article »
I know I have mentioned virtualization software before in a few of my past posts and I have said I would talk about it sometime in the future, well here we are. So what is virtualization software? What is it used for and would it be useful for me? There are a few different terms one can use when talking about virtual software, you have hardware virtualization, partial virtualization, application virtualization, and a half dozen others but the one I want to talk about and use the most often is ‘Full Virtualization’ or the ability to completely simulate the underlying hardware to allow a guest operating system to run without making any code or system changes to the main system. The nice thing about this software is you don’t have to be tied down to one operating system on one computer, meaning if you buy a computer that is running lets say Windows Vista or 7 and you want to give Linux a try without having to do a complete install over your existing Vista or 7 operating system losing all your data you can use virtualization software to try Linux without the risk. A few days ago I talked about the benefits of free and open source software. Today I am going to show you how to install a Linux operating system on your Windows PC without being invasive, meaning you don’t have to repartition your hard drive, which before was the only way to do it, other than a complete installation. There are a couple different ways to do this, one way is to use a virtualization software or the Wubi installer by Ubuntu. Lets talk about the Wubi installer this week and I’ll talk about the virtualization software in a later post. Windows-based Ubuntu installer or just Wubi has been around since mid 2008 and offers a great, easy way to install Ubuntu inside of windows just like you would any other application and it uninstalls Ubuntu just as easy with no difficulties. So lately, there seems to be an all out war going on with phone manufactures over who has the best Android phone. Almost every manufacturer is putting out their best effort, but only two of them have been real contenders.
First out of the gate we had Motorola, who put out the first Droid. It was an excellent kickoff for the Android community, and really set the bar high for their competitors. Since that point though, they have failed to release another phone of interest to anyone. Next up was htc. Htc brought out quite a few Android devices that really hit the mark that was set for them. They continue to produce device after device that pushes the envelope in a very good way.
What about those people at LG? Didn’t they make a device that was featured in a movie? Well yes they did, but it really pales in comparison to the real flagship devices out there. LG made their Android contribution feel like an afterthought, like they put it out there just so they could claim they had one. It almost seems like they didn’t care.
So to sum it up, if you want an Android phone, get the Motorola Droid, or just about anything from htc, otherwise you will always have that little feeling in your stomach that you cheated yourself.

So you have a large CD collection… That is understandable, they have been around since 1982 (well at least that is when they were invented). Now you have an iPod, maybe someone bought it for you, or maybe you just felt it was time. Either way, you need to fill that iPod, and the lovely folks at Apple will charge you $0.99 per song that you want to download.
But wait, don’t you have all these CD’s lying around that you already own? Well good news for you, because those lovely folks at Apple also included a way to copy those to your iPod through the iTunes program. All you have to do is pop the CD into your computer, open iTunes, and it will ask you if you would like to import the CD into your library. Just click “Yes”, and repeat with as many CD’s as you want. This comes in handy, because if you just so happen to lose the CD, you still have a copy backed up on your computer!
Now, all of your CD’s are copied to your iPod, seems really efficient and easy, but now you want to listen to your iPod, but you don’t want to have to wear headphones. This is understandable, and I have a couple devices that will help you accomplish that task.
Did you just get an android phone?? Yes, you should be very excited but before you start going app crazy here are the two most important ones to download first.
Lookout- this app will ensure you dont download any viruses to your phone. (yes it is possible to get viruses, it is an open platform so anyone can develop apps, good or bad)
Is your battery life anything but incredible??? here is a simple way to dramatically improve it.
settings> wireless & networks>mobile networks>uncheck enables always on
You should be able to last almost 2 full days on one charge. of course it will depend on use, but it will definitely get you through the day!
Today is a popular day for Android walk throughs. The next task we are going to tackle is getting your downloaded (legally of course… lol) movies to play on your Android device.
First of all, the format that these phones can recognize is the 3GP modification of Mpeg4… Have I lost you yet? Its ok, just like the previous article, there really is no reason to need to know the technical definitions, just follow the walk through and you will be just fine.
